Add some zest to your life with lemons!

Lemons
Love life; love lemons.

Let’s start with a simple loose lemon which is 30p from the supermarket – possibly even cheaper from your local fruit and veg stall down the market. Do you know how awesome lemons are? Not only do they offer so much more than being added to a Gin & Tonic (that’s pretty good in itself!), but these offerings they have can actually save you money!

Lemons have antibacterial and anti-fungal properties which can heal acne and help remove blackheads. They can also get rid of oily skin and can lighten blemishes and dark spots. So, no longer do you need to buy that expensive cream. Just be careful if you have any open cuts on your face as rubbing lemon into that will sting!

A combination of lemon juice and baking soda can whiten your teeth. Don’t leave it on for any longer than a minute as it can damage teeth by starting to break down enamel. No more money spent on expensive teeth whitening products! They can also strength nails, lighten hair, and sooth chapped lips. But aside from our beauty regime, what else can they do to save us cash?

Lemons are full of vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and fibre. That’s a whole bunch of your daily vitamins covered, which could save you money on vitamin tablets. Lemon water gives your immune system a boost, keeping bugs at bay which will keep you healthy, and mean you need to take less sick days. Lemons can fight off viral infections, too. They also contain pectin fibre, which assists in fighting hunger cravings – great if you’re trying to loose weight, farewell diet club membership!

Why not swap your morning coffee for a cup of hot lemon water? You’ll not only avoid the afternoon caffeine crash, but you’ll feel more refreshed, and spend less cash at Starbucks! That could be a saving of £15+ each week!

Lemons can be used to clean. You can make effective all-purpose cleaning spray out of lemons, which tends to last longer and work just as well, if not more so than shop bought cleaners. Heating up some lemon juice in the microwave will clean said microwave with no real scrubbing involved. Not only does lemon clean, it deodorises as well. Pop some peel in your dishwasher and you’ll notice the difference. Polish copper, clean wooden chopping blocks, unstick stuck on food – lemons could be your new kitchen superhero. You’re not using chemicals either, it’s all natural!

The value of money and how to save and when to spend is a life lesson – they’ll thank you for it when they’re older.

You could teach your kids the value of money by setting up a traditional lemonade stand at the front of your house. Sell to your neighbours and thirsty passersby on a hot summer’s day. Have you ever sniffed a lemon? Apparently, sniffing citrus fragrances, lemon in particular, boosts your mood. Science says that it increases your serotonin level (feel good hormone) and lowers a stress hormone called Norepinephrine. By brightening your mood, you’ll avoid spending money on comfort food, those ‘perk you up’ purchases, and possibly medication. If you don’t fancy sniffing lemons, scented candles are available for a few quid. If it really does improve your mood, it could well be worth it!
